      Application Date: Varies by locale (check USDA’s portal)
      Uses: Build or upgrade essential facilities—like town halls, fire stations, health clinics, schools, libraries, and public infrastructure—within rural towns of under 20,000 residents

    • Rural Community Development Initiative (RCDI)
      Next Application Date: Notified to open mid-2025
      Uses: Supports strategic planning, grant-readiness, board training, and technical assistance to strengthen community development capacity. Grant amounts typically range between $50,000–$500,000.

    • Rural Economic Development Loan & Grant Programs
      Application Date: FY2025 cycle announced Nov 21, 2024
      Uses: Provides zero-interest loans or revolving loan funds via local utility organizations for projects that create or retain rural jobs.

  • USDA — Farm to School Grant Program

    Programs:

      • Application Deadline: January 10, 2025, by 11:59 pm ET

      • Typical Uses: Supports planning and implementing initiatives like local food procurement for school meals, school gardens, taste tests, and agricultural education

  • U.S. Department of Education — 21st Century Community Learning Centers (21st CCLC)

    Programs:

    • Application Window: Consolidated grant submission deadline—for Title IV, Part B—is April 11, 2025 

      • Typical Uses: Funds academic enrichment programs for students before/after school or during summer, with a focus on high-poverty, low-performing schools. Supports core academics, arts, technology, and family literacy

  • U.S. Department of Education — Small, Rural School Achievement (SRSA)

    Program

    • Application Date: Annual formula-based grants for eligible LEAs; ongoing with funds allocated based on formula—not a competitive application 

    • Typical Uses: Supports small, rural districts with flexible funding under Titles I–IV, including academic achievement initiatives. Funds may be used via alternative fund use authority (AFUA) across allowed activities

  • USDA — Secure Rural Schools (SRS) Programs

    Programs:

    • Application Timing: Ongoing, formula-based support to eligible rural districts; specifics vary by region and forest-service administration Food and Nutrition Service

      • Typical Uses: Helps rural school districts in forested areas fund educational services, infrastructure, transportation, and public safety.

  • Nonprofit Security Grant Program (NSGP)
